Tokyo's Home of Hip Hop
Ask anyone in the Japanese hip hop scene and HARLEM is the first name that comes up. Running since 1997, it is the longest-standing hip hop club in Shibuya and a rite of passage for Tokyo's club kids.
After the ID check at the 1st-floor entrance, head up to the 2nd floor and you'll step into something closer to a New York club than anything else in Japan. The room is built around the DJ booth — this is a space designed for dancing, not standing around.
The 3rd floor has VIP rooms, and hip hop artists from Japan and overseas regularly drop in unannounced.
What to Expect
The crowd
This is the temple of Japanese hip hop: B-boy fashion, streetwear, skater and rude-boy styles. The guys here genuinely love the music. The women lean flashy — dancers, hostesses, bold hair colors — and most people are here to dance, not to sit quietly.
The music
Hip hop and R&B all night, played loud on a system built for it. If you want EDM, go to ATOM TOKYO up the street — if you want boom bap and the latest US charts, this is your room.
House Rules & Entry
Before you go — rules that surprise first-time visitors to Japan
- Photo ID is required for everyone. For visitors, that means your passport (the original — a photo of it is usually not accepted).
- 20+ only. The drinking age in Japan is 20, and clubs enforce it at the door.
- Dress code: no sandals or overly casual wear for men. Streetwear is fine — this is a hip hop club.
- Entry system: the cover charge typically includes one drink ticket ("1D").
- Visible tattoos are generally tolerated here more than at hotel clubs, but staff have final say at the door.
Getting There
5 minutes on foot from Shibuya Station (Hachiko exit), up Dogenzaka in the Maruyama-cho club district. The same building (Dr. Jeekahn's Bldg.) also houses ATOM TOKYO.
Last train tip
- Tokyo trains stop around midnight and restart around 5:00 — which is exactly why clubs here run until 5:00.
- Locals either leave before the last train (~23:30 from Shibuya) or commit to the full night and take the first train home. Plan which one you're doing before you start drinking.
